Staying in Karon: a long, quiet beach between Patong and Kata

152 accommodations

Karon is one of the longest beaches on Phuket's west coast, a wide, straight stretch of pale sand between the headland of Patong to the north and Kata to the south. Behind the beach a road and a strip of grass separate the sand from the hotels, and inland the area spreads around a small lake, a temple and a few streets of restaurants, shops and massage parlours. It is quieter and more spacious than Patong, less compact than Kata, and popular with families, couples and travellers on longer holidays.

On this site Karon covers Karon Beach, the village of Ban Karon behind it and Karon Noi, the small bay also known as Relax Bay, tucked between Karon and Patong.

Who should stay in Karon?

Karon suits families, couples and travellers who want space on the beach, a wide choice of mid-range hotels and resorts, and an easy-going evening scene. It is well placed between Patong, about 15 to 20 minutes to the north, and Kata, just to the south, so nightlife and restaurants are close without being next door.

The trade-offs are that the beach can be exposed to strong waves in the rainy season, the main road separates many hotels from the sand, and the area has less character than Kata or Phuket Town. The airport is over an hour away.

Hotels and resorts in Karon

The 152 properties listed in this area are mostly hotels, followed by apartments, resorts, guest houses and a few villas. Karon has many large resorts with big pools and gardens across the road from the beach, as well as mid-range hotels and apartments in the streets around the temple and the lake; according to 2026 market data, economy and midscale hotels are a large share of the accommodation here. Guest ratings are high, with a median of about 8.6 out of 10 on this site.

Karon is part of the central west coast, where upscale and luxury hotels averaged about 8,600 baht a night in the first half of 2026, but the area as a whole offers good value for a west-coast beach. When choosing, check whether the hotel is on the beach road or further inland, and how busy the road is in front of it.

What is there to do in Karon?

Karon Beach is long enough for walks of an hour or more, with fine sand that squeaks underfoot and space even in high season. In the dry season the water is clear and calm; from about May to October the waves can be powerful, and red flags often forbid swimming. In June 2025 there were fatal drownings at Karon and Kata despite the red flags, so always respect the flags and swim near the lifeguards. At the northern end, Karon Noi is a small, sheltered bay with clear water.

In the village, the Karon Temple Market is held in the grounds of the local temple, with street food, clothes and souvenirs, and the Karon Night Market and small bars keep the evenings lively but relaxed. The Karon Viewpoint, on the road towards Rawai, shows Kata Noi, Kata and Karon in one view and is especially beautiful at sunset.

From Karon, Kata is a short walk or ride, Patong 15 to 20 minutes, and the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and Promthep Cape about 20 to 40 minutes by car; tours to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay collect guests from most hotels.

How do you get to Karon?

From Phuket International Airport, about 50 km to the north, the ride takes about 60 to 75 minutes; airport taxis cost about 850 to 1,100 baht. The Phuket Smart Bus stops along Karon Beach on its route from the airport to Rawai, for a flat 100 baht.

Within Karon, most places are walkable along the beach road. Ride-hailing cars to Patong cost about 100 to 140 baht, and tuk-tuks charge more, so agree the price first. Many visitors rent a scooter to explore the south, which requires a motorcycle licence, an International Driving Permit valid for motorcycles and a helmet.

When is Karon at its best?

The dry season, from about November to April, is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and long walks on the beach; the busiest and most expensive weeks are from Christmas to February. The rainy season, from about May to October, brings big waves, frequent red flags and lower prices, with the heaviest rain in September and October. The sea is warm all year, about 28 to 30 °C.

What is daily life like in Karon?

Karon is a quiet, residential kind of resort. In the morning people walk and jog along the beach and the promenade, and the cafés along the main road fill with breakfast customers. During the day the beach is spacious, with sun loungers at the busier points and long empty stretches in between.

In the evening, the restaurants around the temple, the lake and the beach road fill up, families stroll through the markets, and a few music bars stay open late. Many visitors are repeat guests from Europe, Russia and Australia, and some stay for weeks in the apartments and resorts. Away from the beach road, Thai families live and work in the side streets, and the temple is a focus of local life during festivals.

For travellers, Karon is a comfortable, unhurried base with plenty of space on the sand and the livelier beaches of Patong and Kata close by.

Where to eat in Karon?

Karon has a good choice of Thai and international restaurants, many of them family-run, along the beach road and in the streets around the temple. Seafood restaurants display the day's catch on ice, and noodle shops and curry stalls serve local food at low prices.
